Tips for Making Your Dog As A Service Dog

We are often asked how to make your dog a service dog. A service dog can follow special instructions and assist their owners if they are disabled. These dogs should be specially trained in a dog training organization.

Service Dog Requirement

If you are interested in having a service dog, below are requirements to be aware of:

  • A person is eligible for a service dog if they have a physical, emotional or mental disability
  • A service dog must be well mannered at all times
  • A service dog must be trained to perform specific tasks that aid in a disability
  • If it is not obvious what service the dog provides, the handler must be willing to answer two questions about their service dog. Optionally, it can help for service dogs to be clearly identified with accessories.

Tips for service dog training

Choose a suitable dog for your needs.

If you are preparing to have a dog that is supposed to be a service dog, choose a dog that is for you.

Any dog breed can be suitable for service work. From Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Bully Breeds, Poodles, Huskies, etc. All types of dogs are eligible to become services dogs, each potentially adept at providing a different type of service. It is important to note that under ADA rules an establishment cannot discriminate against a service dog solely because it is a certain breed or size.

Basic requirements for a service dog

  • Health: Have a full veterinary check-up to rule out the possibility of diseases such as arthritis and diabetes, as these could increase the responsibility for the animals, which would add to their stress.
  • Age: A dog at least six months old who has a healthy and well-developed body to endure the training.

Patience

If you decide to train your dog without a trainer, you should be patient during training as it is difficult for dogs to fully concentrate on listening to your commands. Refuse to discontinue training due to ineffective results or lack of time.

Encourage the dog with food or gentle stroking if he/she performs the tasks successfully. In contrast, punishment is necessary if they refuse the orders and/or bark,  bite or fight with other dogs.
